Verrucae & Wart Treatment

, the If you have tried unsuccessfully to win the fight against persistent Verrucas and Warts, then our chiropodists in Haywards Heath can help with individually designed Verruca and Wart treatment.

Verrucae are caused by a virus, the human papillomavirus, and this is the same virus that causes warts, so a verruca is simply a wart on the foot. There are over 70 types of human papillomavirus so verrucae come in many shapes and sizes; some are easier to treat than others. The infected cells cannot be cured, they must be destroyed. If any of the cells survive treatment, then the verruca will reappear.

Verrucae and Warts

How do I know if I have a verruca?

The surface usually appears rough and cauliflower-like, and you may also see small black dots – these are old blood vessels, not roots which is a common misconception! Verrucae rarely hurt to press unless they are large. They will, however, hurt if they are squeezed and the opposite is usually the case for corns. As there are so many different types, it is better to let a podiatrist give you a diagnosis.

Types Of Treatment

Treatment varies depending on various factors, e.g. type, size, number, location, the age of the patient, patient’s occupation, etc. At the Sussex Foot Centre, we offer various treatments to suit you and the type of verruca or wart, including cryotherapy, caustic therapy and verruca needling where appropriate:

  • Cryotherapy (freezing) – For wart and verruca freezing, the freeze is usually applied via a probe; this minimizes the trauma to the surrounding area and allows for deeper penetration of the freeze. It may also be applied as a spray.

  • Caustic Therapy – Caustics are applied usually on a weekly basis for 4-6 weeks, dependent on the size and persistence of the verruca, and are much stronger and more effective than treatments that you can purchase from a pharmacist. Self-applied home treatments are usually added between visits to speed up treatment time.

  • Dry Needling Verruca needling is carried out painlessly under local anaesthetic. A sterile needle is then used to cause a localised trauma to the verruca itself. The aim of this is to implant the virally infected cells deeper into the tissue where it is quickly detected by the immune system and an immune response is stimulated. This process has been around for nearly 40 years but it’s only recently reaching the shores of the UK from the states. It is very effective and suitable for most verrucas.

I'm a keen runner, and Jon's expertise has played a huge part in getting me back running after a few injury setbacks. Since working with Jon and introducing orthotics, I feel so much more confident in my body and have recently completed a marathon and 50k - something that felt a long way off 12 months ago! Jon is extremely welcoming and always takes the time to explain his approach. Highly recommend!

From the moment I walked into the office, the staff were welcoming and professional. Jon took the time to listen to all my concerns and provided a thorough explanation of my treatment options. I had a complicated tendon injury which required intensive treatment including ultrasound scans, custom orthotics, steroid injections and shockwave therapy. The care I have received has been first class and I felt truly taken care of every step of the way. When I first saw Jon I could barely walk and was in terrible pain but now my foot is healing and the pain has gone. This is thanks entirely to Jon's expert treatment, meaning I have been able to avoid major surgery and I couldn’t be more grateful. Highly recommend this practice to anyone in need of expert podiatric care!

Very good place for all kinds of podiatry and other foot services. Jon is a fantastic podiatrist and clinican, made me personalised orthotics for my terribly flat feet and still provides me with chiropody services for my feet. Elaine on reception very friendly and remembers my name. Thanks again Sussex Foot Centre and Jon for all the care you have provided me and my feet and are still providing.

Patient review: Tilly aged 9: I started off with my feet in a pretty bad state with lots of verrucas. It was painful and stopping me doing my football. When I came to see Jon he was funny, good to chat to and explained things to me well. It didn’t even hurt but was tickly! After 3 visits my feet feel much better and I am back to my football. His room is very clean and there is a comfy chair you get to sit on which goes really high. I give him a 5 star review!

We are beyond grateful for Dr. Jon’s kindness and care. My little daughter developed a contagious wart during a trip abroad and felt so shy about it. But from the moment we met Dr. Jon, we knew she was in the best hands. He made every visit fun and easy, and after just a couple of sessions, she’s happier than ever! ☺️ Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Dr. Jon! We’ll be recommending you and Sussex Foot Centre to everyone!
