Your nails are more than just a canvas for your favourite polish – they’re actually a great insight into your overall health and wellbeing. These small but significant parts of your body can reveal important clues about nutritional deficiencies, infections, and even serious underlying medical conditions. Knowing what your nails are trying to tell you could be the key to catching health issues early and maintaining healthy feet.

Reading the Rainbow of Health Signals

The colour of your nails can provide remarkable insights into your health. Healthy nails typically appear pink with a smooth, consistent tone, but various conditions can cause dramatic colour changes.

Yellow nails are often one of the most common concerns, frequently indicating fungal nail infections that may require professional treatment. In severe cases, laser treatment for fungal nails is an increasingly popular and effective option for those struggling with persistent infections that don’t respond to traditional antifungal medications.

White nails, on the other hand, can signal anaemia or liver problems, while pale nail beds might indicate poor circulation or nutritional deficiencies. Blue or purple nails often suggest circulation issues, which require immediate medical attention.

Texture Changes

The texture of your nails can be equally revealing about the status of your health. Healthy nails should be smooth, strong, and relatively flexible. However, various factors can cause significant texture changes that signal underlying problems. Ridges running vertically along the nail are often harmless signs of ageing, but horizontal ridges can indicate illness, high fever, or severe stress that has temporarily interrupted nail growth.

Brittle, dry nails that crack or split easily can suggest thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies (particularly a lack of biotin, iron, or vitamin D), or excessive exposure to harsh chemicals, while soft, thin nails that bend easily can indicate hormonal imbalances. Thick, overgrown nails are typically a sign of fungal infections.

Nail Separation

Onycholysis, or nail separation, occurs when the nail begins to separate from the nail bed, creating a white or yellowish area at the tip of the nail. This condition can have various causes, ranging from minor trauma to serious underlying health conditions. Injury from aggressive manicuring, prolonged exposure to water, or even wearing tight-fitting shoes can cause separation. However, fungal infections are one of the most common causes of nail separation.

Painful Toes

If you’re experiencing a sudden pain in your big toe, it could be gout. This is a form of inflammatory arthritis which is caused by a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints. While it can affect the elbows, knees or wrists, it’s most common in the feet and especially the big toe.

Another cause of pain in the toes is an ingrown toenail, which can cause swelling and inflammation to the side of the nail bed. This occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, typically at the side of the nail bed. As the nail continues to press into the soft tissue, it can result in noticeable swelling, redness, and inflammation.

The affected area may also become tender to the touch, and wearing shoes or walking can become incredibly painful. If left untreated, the ingrown nail can break the skin, creating an entry point for bacteria and infection.

When to Seek Professional Help

While minor nail changes are often harmless and temporary, certain signs should be seen to by a professional. Any sudden, dramatic changes in nail colour, texture, or growth pattern should be evaluated by a specialist, and signs of swelling or infection need to be treated straight away to prevent them from getting worse and spreading. Remember that nail changes often reflect other health issues, so addressing problems may require treating other underlying conditions first like diabetes, thyroid disorders, or nutritional deficiencies.

Your nails are constantly growing and changing, and in the process, they can act as an ongoing record of your health. Pay attention to these important signals so you can take proactive steps to maintain your overall wellbeing and catch potential health issues before they become serious problems.

The Achilles Tendon which Is also named the Calcaneal Tendon is a
very durable, strong band of tissue. It connects the calf muscles to
the heel bone, and it is the strongest tendon in the human body, capable of holding up to 3 times its body weight! The tendon can become inflamed due to overuse or injury. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury and often causes pain, swelling and irritation.

Achilles Insertional Calcific Tendinosis is a condition that can develop usually by overuse of the tendon. Repetitive mechanical stress
can lead to microtears in the Achilles tendon, as well as collagen
degeneration. Over time the tendon can become damaged and the
fibres of the tendon can harden, which can often lead to bone spurs.
The condition can be caused due to a few different factors including: a
sudden increase in the intensity or type of exercise. This could simply be
from increasing running distance, or changing from a low impact sport to a
high impact sport.

Furthermore, this condition can also be exacerbated by having tight posterior
leg muscles (calf muscles). This stems from the Achilles being constantly. under more pressure and therefore putting strain on it and the surrounding structures and tissues.

Common symptoms of the condition are having stiffness and pain along
the Achilles tendon, that is made worse during weight-bearing and strenuous
activity. This pain often continues into the next day and is usually quite
severe. Oedema (swelling) can sometimes be visible around the
Achilles, calf, and into the back of the heel. Thickening of the tendon is
also another common symptom, as well as having bone spurs from the
calcaneus which can irritate the Achilles.

Here at the Sussex Foot Centre we can diagnose the condition quickly and clinically using our Ultrasound. This allows us to look at the tendon as well as the
tissues and bones which surround it. We are able to see in real time if there is any
calcific bone spurs, and if the tendon is enlarged or damaged in any way.

We always recommend that patients who have AICT should wear
Orthoses or Insoles to ensure their foot is being held in an optimum position. As
well as taking the strain off the Achilles tendon, supporting the
surrounding structures and taking the load off. This helps to aid healing
and a reduction in pain and inflammation.

Additionally, another treatment option is a Corticosteroid Injection. This
treatment is when corticosteroid (steroid) is injected into the tissue
around the Achilles. This helps to reduce inflammation and pain in the
area, it is carried out under ultrasound guidance. If you have tried other
methods and are still experiencing pain and discomfort, then a
corticosteroid injection may be a good option for you.

If you would like to hear more about how we can treat Achilles
Insertional Calcific Tendinosis and other lower limb related conditions,
then please do not hesitate to contact The Sussex Foot Centre! We
would love to meet you!

Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition treated at The Sussex Foot Centre. The
Plantar Fascia is a large band of tissue which is situated along the bottom of
the foot. Medical research states that Plantar Fasciitis affects up to 10% of the
population. It is therefore something that we see a lot of, here at the clinic!

There are many treatment options which can be implemented to help treat
this and to relieve your symptoms. The pain in your foot may have become worse
due to increased or changed activity levels during lockdown, or indeed through a change of
footwear.

Individuals who are active and, specifically, those individuals who partake in
running are mostly affected by the condition, as this high impact sport can put
pressure on the fascia and create inflammation and pain. The
condition can, therefore, affect a person’s quality of life and stop them from doing certain
hobbies or activities.

There are many different types of treatment options we can use, depending on
the severity and the personal choice of the patient. Orthotics, muscle
Stretching Regimes, Corticosteroid Injection and Shockwave Therapy are all
ways of treating the condition here at the Sussex Foot Centre:

Bespoke Orthotics:

Orthotics can be prescribed. The word ‘ortho’ comes from Latin meaning
‘straight’. These inserts are bespoke and fitted to your specific foot type, shape
and individual requirements. They correct your foot position, allowing your
foot and ankle to function at their optimum.
Clinically we have found that a high number of patients suffer with this
condition due to their feet being overpronated, which is the podiatric term for
having flattened arches. This can put extra stress and pull on the plantar fascia,
which in turn creates pain. Additionally, patients who have feet with
particularly high arches can also be affected due to being more unstable when
walking. These devices are very discrete and can be changed between shoes!
Shockwave Therapy:

Shockwave Therapy:

A treatment for Plantar Fasciitis which is offered at the clinic is Shockwave
Therapy. This is a treatment option where high energy sound waves are passed
through the bottom of the foot to help blood flow and help with cell
regeneration. This helps to repair the micro tears in the tissues which can
occur with overuse and injury. Shockwave can be used alone or in conjunction
with orthotics to help reduce symptoms and pain levels of Plantar Fasciitis.

Steroid injection:

This treatment is when corticosteroid (steroid) is injected directly into the
Plantar Fascia. This helps to reduce inflammation and pain in the area, it is
carried out under ultrasound guidance. If you have tried other methods and
are still experiencing pain and discomfort, then a corticosteroid injection may
be a good option for you.

Calling all runners, we want to hear from you! If you are experiencing any aches and pains during or after your run, we would love to talk to you and discuss exactly how we can help. For a limited period of time, we will be offering a 20% discount off your initial appointment.

In this appointment, our experienced practitioners and certified sonographers will create a comprehensive diagnostic image through use of ultrasound. With this, we can create a detailed study of all of the inner working of the foot.

Some of the services we provide at the Sussex Foot Centre include the manufacturing of Custom Orthotics, Gait Analysis and Bio Mechanical Assessment, and Sports Massage Therapy. Ultimately however, we will work with you and with your specific needs in mind. We will reach a treatment strategy which is tailored specifically for you.

Ultrasound is quick, easy, and straight forward. And the best part is that images can be seen straight away in real time.

Here is an example where ultrasound works best. Our patient presents to clinic following a tumble whilst playing tennis. He has suffered an inversion sprain, which means he has rolled his ankle outwards. Excessive pressure is placed on the 5th metatarsal and the tendon which inserts onto the base of the 5th metatarsal has come away, this is also known as an avulsion fracture. To the trained eye, this can be seen as clear as day.

Now this patient presented within a week after suffering his injury, however, the exact problem which he came to us with can be identified weeks, if not months after initial injury. Ultrasound can therefore help to identify issues at all stages of the treatment episode. This helps us to ensure that we are constantly on track with our treatment strategy.

Ultrasound is also hugely useful tool when used to compare and contrast from one side of the foot to the other. As with all that we do, treatment carried out at the Sussex Foot Centre is in line with NHS guidelines of fracture management. With our Diagnostic Ultrasound, we can ensure that you can cut down on those long waits at A&E. Working together, we can devise an informed, accurate, and up to date treatment strategy that works for you.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy, or, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a highly effective treatment for pain, chronic soft tissue injuries, as well as certain types of bone conditions.

An extracorporeal shockwave is a non-invasive, non-electrical high energy sound wave that passes through the body via a hand-held probe. The shockwaves produce a rapid increase in blood flow to the localised target area. This works to break-down the fibrous scar tissue which builds up over time and is particularly prevalent with chronic conditions.

This break-down of scar tissue is the key to why shock wave therapy is so effective. Unlike normal tissue, scar tissue is non-elastic and will inhibit and prevent normal movement and function, and will ultimately weaken the healthy tissue surrounding it, often leading to further damage and pain.

By increasing circulation and breaking down scar tissue, shockwave therapy will stimulate cell regeneration and promote normal healing and rapid reduction of pain. The normal function can then be restored.

How successful is Shockwave Therapy?

After only 3 or 4 treatments with shockwave therapy, over 80% of patients report a reduction of pain and a regaining of normal function.

Research is steadily growing for this cutting-edge technology, and the latest reports are confirming shockwave therapy is an effective treatment for numerous soft tissue injuries, pain and certain bone related conditions like heel spurs.

If you would like to make an appointment or speak to one of our experienced practitioners, please call 01444453874

What does Shockwave Therapy treat?

Plantar Fasciitis

Probably the most common condition that is known to respond very well to Shockwave Therapy is Plantar Fasciitis, often known as Policeman’s foot.

The pain is usually felt on the medial tubercle (the calcaneus) of the heel and is felt along the Soft Tissues of the foot to the base of the toes. This is the inside of the calcaneal, the bone that has the heel strike with the ground. Given the foot’s biomechanical structure, a heal strike as you walk is the most common footfall pattern, but this alone is not necessarily the cause of any problems. Factors through the hip and joints above the ankle can also contribute to this condition.

Plantar Fasciitis is the condition where we often see patients with high BMI, diabetes and other pathologies that affect the foot. The foot might be the last thing in their consideration, but a nasty plantar fasciitis can cause significant discomfort and pain for patients. Given the impact on their mobility. It can also lead to the deterioration of overall health and wellbeing.

With this condition the symptoms are often morning pain or pain after resting. Typically, there is some improvement with movement as the area ‘warms up’ however with more severe conditions the patient simply can’t walk with the ease and mobility which they would want.

Because so many people are treated for this condition each year, many patients we see have already had injections, physiotherapy, acupuncture and heel supports. Lifting the heal and arches by way of customised orthotic devises can be of great help to correct the biomechanical issue, however, patients are sometimes still left with an unremitting pain.

The largest double-blind study into the effectiveness of Shockwave Therapy was conducted by Gerdesmeyer in 2008. It conclusively proved that Shockwave Therapy is a safe and effective treatment for recalcitrant (recalcitrant means not responding or simply being stubborn to heal) plantar fasciitis and we subsequently have had NICE guidelines from 2009. The complex biomechanical nature of the foot can make it a difficult area to treat but the results are among the most successful of any Shockwave treatment.

Other Conditions where Shockwave Therapy is Effective

Shockwave therapy is an effective on a significant range of soft tissue and skeletal ailments. Here are some examples of conditions where shockwave therapy has effectively treated and restored normal function:

Patellar tendonitis (jumper‘s knee)

Tibial stress syndrome (shin pain)

Achilles tendonitis

Hip pain

Heel pain, heel spurs

Chronic neck dysfunction

What can I expect during my consultation?

At your first visit, you will meet one of our experienced Specialist Podiatrists, who will discuss your symptoms and condition, followed by a comprehensive and non-invasive ultrasound scan before treatment of the area of pain or injury.

Shockwave therapy will be fully explained, and treatment will commence. Shockwave treatment typically lasts for 10-15 minutes.

There are no known side effects of Shockwave Therapy and most patients experience a significant reduction in their pain. Occasionally, a mild diffuse pain can be experienced within a few hours of treatment and may last 24 hours.

Underlying factors when Shockwave Therapy would not be appropriate

There are a few circumstances when shockwave therapy should not be used, so please inform your practitioner if you are experiencing any of the conditions or circumstances listed below:

● If pregnant or trying to conceive

● For application over open growth plates – not suitable for under 18 years.

● Over metal pins or plates

● Malignant Tumours

● Nerve or circulation disorders

● Infections

● If the patient is taking anticoagulants

Costs for treatment

During your appointment, our practitioners will combine treatment, advice, and a comprehensive ultrasound scan, along with your shockwave therapy to ensure you get the best chance of a successful result.

Research and experience suggest that a minimum of three treatments is required, but this can be discussed with our practitioners during your appointment.

Coping with chronic heal pain can be a real pain in the, well, foot. Diagnosing exactly what the issue is can also be difficult without a proper medical examination. However, a likely culprit will be plantar fasciitis – a chronic, weight bearing, repetitive microtrauma pathology that can lead to degeneration and inflammation. Whether it be a shooting pain up your leg, a stabbing pain in the base of your foot or a dull ache in your heel, plantar fasciitis causes different symptoms and levels of pain amongst patients.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, and is brought on when a thick band of tissue across the bottom of your foot (called the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed. Since the condition takes a long time to develop, this inflammation is typically caused as a result of a sports-related activity or due to a poor choice of footwear.

However, there are other risk
factors that can increase your chances of developing the condition. These
typically include obesity (as the added weight puts extra stress on your feet),
age and standing for long periods of time.

What are its symptoms?

The most commonly reported
symptom is a stabbing pain that usually occurs after you’ve just stood up and
started the day. Once you’re up and moving around, the pain normally lessens
but returns later on after a long period of standing, or when rising to stand
from a seated position.

The pain also seems to get worse when
exercising, so the plantar fasciitis is said to be particularly common in
athletes competing in sports that involve running or jumping.

How is it diagnosed?

Many cases of plantar fasciitis can be self-diagnosed using an online symptom checker. However, getting the condition looked at by a professional is the only real way of knowing for sure whether the problem is plantar fasciitis or something else entirely.

To diagnose the issue correctly, an experienced podiatrist will use a specialised imaging procedure called a Diagnostic Foot Ultrasound. This will produce an accurate image of your foot’s interior structure which will, in turn, allow the trained expert to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue.

The system uses high-frequency
sound waves to produce a picture of all the muscles, tendons, ligaments and
joints in your foot. Now, while this may all sound technical and scary, it
really is anything but. The procedure is completely painless and only takes
between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. Plus, once it’s over and done with, the podiatrist
will provide you with a tailored treatment plan and expert advice to resolve the
issue.

What are the treatment options?

Many of the best ways of treating plantar fasciitis come from home-based treatments. As a general rule, you should make sure to invest in some supportive footwear and use an ice pack whenever the pain arises. You should also rest your foot when you can, and avoid standing up for too long. Coupled with this rest, you should try a number of daily stretching exercises to improve your plantar fascia’s ability to bear your weight when next up and about.

For more severe cases of plantar
fasciitis, wearing a night splint is recommended. This helps to brace your foot
and ankle in the correct position while you sleep, stretching the plantar
fascia and helping ease the pain.

If none of these techniques make a
difference to the pain after several months, a surgical procedure may be
required. Steroid injections, shock wave therapy and plantar fascia removal are
all examples of these, but they are only really needed if the chronic heel pain
becomes too much to handle.

If you are suffering from chronic heel pain in the Sussex area and would like to have the issue looked at by a professional, contact us today.
Whether we’re walking, running, jumping, or climbing, our feet take a lot of abuse on a daily basis…

In fact, according to the College of Podiatry, each of us will walk approximately 150,000 miles in our lifetime – that’s equivalent to walking around the world more than six times.

It will probably come as no surprise then that suffering from foot-related problems can be a pretty common issue. This isn’t helped by the fact that each foot contains 26 small bones, making our feet one of the body’s most complex and intricate areas. In other words, we all know how painful it can be when we hurt our feet.

Fortunately, thanks to the scientific advances of modern-day medicine, treating foot problems is much easier than it used to be. In this post, we break down three commonly reported foot problems and discuss how each of them can be treated or prevented against.

Athlete’s Foot

Regardless of its name, Athlete’s Foot doesn’t just affect athletes. This fungal infection of the skin is commonly picked up at gyms, showers or swimming pools – pretty much any area where people tend to walk around barefoot.

Since it’s a fungal infection, the fungus that causes Athlete’s Foot tends to thrive in warm, damp areas. It’s incredibly contagious too, able to spread from your feet to other areas of your skin, such as your hands or scalp. Typically found between the toes, the condition causes discomfort, itchiness and pain. You’ll know you have it if your feet start to itch, crack, blister or peel.

Treating it is fairly straightforward using an antifungal spray, powder or lotion. However, if the condition worsens, doctors can prescribe stronger oral antifungal medicines to help.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is one of the most common causes of foot or ankle pain. As its name suggests, tendonitis is caused by inflammation around a tendon – a strong, cord-like muscle which anchors your bones to your legs, feet and ankles. There are four main causes for tendonitis: overuse, abnormal foot structure, trauma or a pre-existing medical condition – more or less anything which causes the tendons surrounding your feet to become damaged.

As with most muscular injuries, the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) method is the first port of call when it comes to treatment. However, if this doesn’t work, you will need to seek professional advice. A doctor, chiropodist or podiatrist will take an X-ray or tendonitis ultrasound of the affected foot, to help diagnose the problem. They will then likely prescribe you nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and recommend some improved footwear to use in order to alleviate the pain.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails, or onychocryptosis by their medical name, are toenails which curve into the skin. They are very common and are mainly caused by any kind of trauma to the nail or nail bed. This could be from dropping something onto your foot, wearing shoes that are too small for you, or from repetitive pressure on your feet when playing certain sports.

Treating the problem depends on its severity. In non-severe cases, over-the-counter options such as antibacterial soap and good quality nail scissors can help alleviate the problem. If the ingrown toenail starts causing you pain though, it’s a good idea to get it looked at by a professional – either a doctor, podiatrist or chiropodist. They will work with you to try and take the pressure of the nail off your skin. However, if these techniques fail to address the problem, surgical treatment will be required to remove the nail.

If you suffer from one of these issues or are concerned about any other foot-related problem, the Sussex Foot Centre is here to help. Why not contact us today so that we can talk through the problem with you?

The foot and ankle are hugely complex…

Hence why the profession of chiropody, now more commonly known as Podiatry has been around in one format or another for hundreds of years.

The images I have displayed to coincide with this blog post are to show just how useful ultrasound is as an imaging technique.

X-ray is used as a mainstay imaging modality by GP’s to ‘see what’s going on’, an X-ray can be hugely beneficial to look within the joints, to see arthritis, signs of gout and fractures to name just a few. But, what X-ray isn’t very good at is looking at swelling.

This is where ultrasound really comes into its own!

Ultrasound works well as your Podiatrist can easily and quickly compare one foot to the other, which helps with diagnosis.

The images below show how a patient’s left big toe joint is normal, but the right foot big toe joint isn’t. This was where the pain was coming from when the patient arrived at the clinic following a trip up the stairs.

The reference to the word ‘effusion’ within the image means swelling and all the black within the groove is essentially swollen fluid that has collected as a result of trauma. What is interesting to mention with this case is there is no arthritis associated with the joint, it’s perfectly healthy, apart from the injury described.

Ultrasound was able to show the patient just how swollen their toe was and why it was feeling so sore when it was bent. The swelling made for a hugely stiff joint. This was settled down with an insole to stop the joint being used and took away 60% of the pain, with a steroid injection used thereafter to remove the rest. The patient was back to running in no time!

And remember… always be careful on stairs!
